Registration with WorkSafeBC ensures that any staff you employ, such as medical office assistants and clinical staff, receive coverage for healthcare benefits, wage-loss benefits, and rehabilitation benefits in the event of a work-related injury or illness.
Other reasons are:
- Registration ensures physician employers are not subject to lawsuits from workers or other employers for work-related injury or illness (i.e., no-fault insurance system).
- If you do not register and an employee is injured, you could be responsible for both the employee’s WorkSafeBC claim costs and your unpaid premiums.
- If a community physician meets WorkSafeBC registration criteria as an employer, but has not been paying premiums, WorkSafeBC may charge physicians retroactively.
- If applicable, registration with WorkSafeBC can be a requirement to maintain hospital privileges in British Columbia.
